The Joneses May Not Be Rich They May Just Have a Bigger Monthly Payment and Here Is What That Means

October 14, 2026•3 min read

Welcome to Why Not Wednesday

Jennifer Constantineau has a question for you. Have you ever scrolled through Facebook or TikTok and looked at someone else’s home, their car, their vacation, their perfectly assembled life and wondered what you are doing wrong?

Here is the thing. You are not comparing your life to their life. You are comparing what you know about your life to what they have chosen to show you. Those are very different things.

What You See and What You Cannot See

You can see the new car. You cannot see the car payment.

You can see the beautiful vacation. You cannot see the credit card balance that funded it.

You can see the bigger house. You cannot see the financial stress required to maintain it every month.

That does not mean everyone with nice things is buried in debt. Some of those people genuinely built the life they are showing you. But appearances cannot tell you which situation you are actually looking at. The person whose home you admire might be thriving financially or they might be one missed paycheck away from serious trouble and you have no way of knowing from the outside.

What Research Actually Shows

Social comparison influences spending behavior in measurable ways. People spend more when they are comparing themselves to others. Sometimes they borrow money specifically to protect an image they believe they need to project to the people around them.

Buying something to look successful is a very different activity from building a life that actually feels successful. And in the long run the first one consistently prevents you from getting to the second one faster. Every dollar spent protecting an image is a dollar that could have been building toward something real.

The Challenge for This Week

Jennifer wants you to write down one thing you have wanted because you saw someone else with it. Then ask yourself one honest question. Would I still want this if nobody else ever saw it?

If the answer is yes make a plan for it. Not debt for it. A plan for it. Save for it intentionally and pursue it on your own timeline because it genuinely matters to you.

If the answer is no give yourself permission to let it go entirely. You do not owe anyone an explanation for choosing not to chase something that was never actually about you in the first place.

You Are Not Behind

You are building a life based on your values rather than someone else’s highlight reel. That is not a consolation prize. It is the better path.

Tell Jennifer in the comments what is one thing you have stopped buying or chasing just to impress other people. If this helped you see social comparison differently subscribe on YouTube, share it with someone who needs the reminder, and remember that the life you want has to start somewhere.

Why not here? Why not now? Why not you?

God bless.
